Symptoms

You may not be able to use Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) to open a message in the Exchange 2000 Server information store. However, if you use Microsoft Outlook, you can open the message without any problem. When you use OWA to open, reply to, or forward the message, the browser may return an "Action Canceled" or "File not Found" error message. This problem occurs with messages that contain a long subject (more than 256 characters) in which the 256th character is a space. OWA may also not open a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) message that has a space in the subject line.

Cause

Exchange 2000 server uses the PR_URL_COMP_NAME property to identify a message. This property is based on the subject property and has a limitation of 256 characters. This problem can occur if the subject size is larger than 256; all of the trailing characters are removed when the PR_URL_COMP_NAME property is constructed. If the 256th character is a space, the construction generates an incorrect value.

More information

When you apply this fix, new messages that contain a long subject (more than 256 characters) in which the 256th character is a space will successfully open. However, with any existing messages in the information store you will still experience the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section. You can remove these existing messages manually.
