Instant message appears using incorrect text format when the DisableRTFIM setting is enabled in Lync 2013

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install a cumulative update for Microsoft Lync 2013 that is dated September 2013.
  • The Rich Text Format (RTF) instant message setting is disabled for the Lync 2013 client.
  • You sign in to Lync 2013, and then you send an instant message to a contact.
  • The contact accepts the instant message.
In this scenario, the contact sees that the first word of the message is black. However, the other words are gray. Additionally, line wraps appear in the middle of words.

To disable the Rich Text Format (RTF) instant message setting, use one of the following methods:
  • Set the DisableRTFIM registry key of the DWORD type to 1 in the following registry path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync
  • Run the following cmdlet in Lync Server Management Shell as an administrator.
    Set-CsClientPolicy DisableRTFIm $True
