Wi-Fi UI connectivity status is incorrect in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer that has a hardware slider switch to control wireless conenctivity.
  • You turn on the airplane mode from the UI, and then you turn Wi-Fi on.
  • You use the hardware slider switch to turn off wireless connectivity.
In this scenario, the UI shows that the Wi-Fi is turned off, but the computer can still connect to wireless networks and use Wi-Fi.

Resolution
