Computer that has a pending firmware update crashes when you upgrade to Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2

Symptoms

Assume that you have a computer that is running Windows RT, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012, and that has a pending firmware update. When you upgrade the operating system to Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2, the pending firmware update is migrated. In this situation, the computer crashes.

How to obtain the update

This update is applied when you upgrade to the release version of Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. The update prevents the migration of the pending firmware update. You may be prompted to accept this update during the upgrade process.

This update does not replace any previously released update.
