0x80040154 error may occur when you create a system image backup in Windows 8.1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running a Windows 8.1-based computer.
  • You create a system image backup and save it to a BD-R disk.

While creating the backup, you receive the following error message. If you did not format the BD-R disk preliminarily, the message is shown many times.

Windows Backup

An error occurred:

Class not registered (0x80040154)

Close Windows Backup and try again.

Cause

This issue occurs because the registered class that is used to display the progress bar in Windows 8, is deleted in Windows 8.1.

Workaround

Before you start system image backup, format the BD-R disc. 

Note Even if you formatted the BD-R disc preliminarily, the error message will be shown once. You can ignore the message and hit OK, the system image backup will continue.
