Windows 8.1 doesn't display ad hoc networks from an earlier version of Windows

Symptoms

You create a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network on a computer that's running a pre-Windows 8.1 version of Windows. However, when you try to connect a computer that's running Windows 8.1 to the ad hoc network, the network does not appear in the list of available networks on the Windows 8.1-based computer.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a design change in Windows 8.1. Ad hoc networks are no longer supported.

Resolution

To wirelessly network a computer that's running Windows 8.1 with other computers that are running an earlier version of Windows, use a wireless router or another access point.
