Ctrl+Alt+Insert Remote Desktop keyboard shortcut doesn't work in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2

Symptoms

On a computer that's running Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2, you specify the Ctrl+Alt+Insert keyboard shortcut to access Remote Desktop Services instead of the previous Ctrl+Alt+Delete shortcut. Or, you use an application (such as VMWare) that has applied this keyboard shortcut replacement. However, you discover that the Ctrl+Alt+Insert keyboard shortcut does not trigger Remote Desktop access on the computer.

Cause

This issue occurs because a new feature in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 already uses the Ctrl+Alt+Insert keyboard shortcut.

Resolution
