Understanding the limitations of roaming Outlook signatures in Microsoft UE-V

View products that this article applies to.

Summary

Information about how to configure email signature settings for Microsoft Outlook is frequently requested by Microsoft User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) customers. Because UE-V's replication mechanism is reliant exclusively on file and registry change settings, some limitations exist on the migration of information that is stored in locations that do not support this kind of replication. One such location is the Outlook MAPI profile. You must understand this limitation to successfully integrate UE-V with the 2007 Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office 2010, and Microsoft Office 2013 suites.

More Information

Microsoft UE-V 1.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Microsoft UE-V 2.0 include templates for the settings locations for the 2007 Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office 2010 suites. You can find Microsoft Office 2013 templates for UE-V 2.0 in the UE-V Gallery. These templates replicate Outlook signatures by capturing signature files that are located in the %appdata%\Microsoft\Signatures folder.

Signature files are shared among all MAPI accounts. However, the default signature is a characteristic of the Outlook MAPI profile. Outlook does not support the migration of MAPI profiles through registry import and export operations. Therefore, UE-V does not try to capture or replicate MAPI profile settings. For more information, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

2850989 Migrating API profiles with Microsoft UE-V is not supported
Although the Outlook profile is stored in the registry and the default signature (per mail account) setting is stored in an easily discoverable manner, the location of this setting is not predictable for a specific Exchange mail account. This setting may be in different locations on different computers. Therefore, the setting cannot be roamed by UE-V.

Any changes that are made to the Outlook default signature setting must be set by another method, such as roaming profiles, Profgen.exe, or Newprof.exe.

The following lines of code in the settings location template are used to capture signature files:

<File>
<Root>
<EnvironmentVariable>APPDATA</EnvironmentVariable>
</Root>
<Path Recursive="true">Microsoft\Signatures</Path>
</File>
