Caret is missing in a webpage in Internet Explorer 11

Symptoms

Assume that you have a web application that handles an onkeyup event for a text input element. The element is in a webpage that runs in Internet Explorer 9 or a later document mode in Internet Explorer 11. When you remove the element and put a focus on the next text input element, the blinking caret is missing and you cannot type anything into the new text input element.

To resolve this issue, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To do this, go to Microsoft Update.

To work around this issue, you can hide the text input element first and only remove it from the DOM after the other element is focused.
