USB disk drive disappears from File Explorer after you resume the computer from hibernation in Windows 8.1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 8.1.
  • The computer has a USB disk drive attached to it.
  • In File Explorer, you can see the USB disk drive and its drive letter.
  • You put the computer into hibernation state.
  • You resume the computer from hibernation.
In this scenario, the USB disk drive is no longer visible in File Explorer after the computer resumes operation. However, the USB disk drive is still accessible so that you can still wrote to it and copy from it through other programs.

Cause

There is a timing issue within File Explorer that causes the USB disk drive not to be displayed.

Workaround

To work around this issue, press the F5 key to refresh the current view in File Explorer.
