EdgeTransport.exe crashes when a transport rule sends a rejection message to an empty address

Symptoms

Assume that Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or a later update version of the rollup is installed in your environment. You also have a transport rule configured that uses the if the sender and recipient’s AD Attribute are Evaluation criteria and the send rejection message to sender with enhanced status code action. In this situation, the EdgeTransport.exe process crashes. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Cause

The transport rule is triggered when the server tries to deliver a message that has an empty FROM field value to a recipient. The attempt to evaluate the sender and recipient’s AD attribute comparison fails. Therefore, the System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException exception is thrown.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:
2917508 Description of Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3

Workaround

To work around this issue, disable or remove the transport rules that use the AD attribute evaluation.
