A local print server is pruned from domain controllers in Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have domain controllers that are running Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 in multiple sites.
  • You have the Print Spooler service enabled on the domain controllers.
  • You have the following policy enabled:

    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Printers\Allow pruning of published printers
    Note This policy is enabled by default.
  • You have a local site print server.
  • Communication between the local print server and the remote domain controllers has not been enabled in Windows Firewall.
In this scenario, the local print server is mistakenly pruned from the domain controllers.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft Support. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 file information notes

Important Windows 8.1 hotfixes and Windows Server 2012 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows 8.1" is listed on the Hotfix Request page.
