Biometric fingerprint device does not work on a Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computer

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use a USB biometric fingerprint device on a computer that is running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
  • The application for the device uses a Private sensor pool.
  • You disconnect the device from the computer and then reconnect it.
  • You swipe finger on the sensor of the device.
In this scenario, the device does not work. Additionally, in event log, the 0x80090036 (WINBIO_E_DEVICE_FAILURE) error is received for the "identify" operation.

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows handles the removal action of the fingerprint device incorrectly.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
