Autocorrection feature does not remember user decisions in Windows 8.1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You type a word on a Windows 8.1-based computer by using the touch keyboard or a Type Cover.
  • The word is recognized as incorrect by the autocorrection feature, and is corrected to another word.
  • You press backspace to undo the correction.
  • You type the word again.
In this scenario, the autocorrection feature still corrects the word to other words.
