Error 3 When Creating a File Share on a Cluster with the Application Wizard

Symptoms

When you try to create a File Share resource in a new group, the creation may not succeed and may generate the following error message stating that the wizard cannot find the specified path:

Cluster Administrator Standard Extension
An Error occurred attempting to set properties
The system cannot find the path specified
Error ID 3: (00000003)

You also see the following information in the Cluster log:

Cause

This issue may occur if the Cluster service tries to create the resource on a node that does not own the disk resource. By default, when you create a group, it is owned by the node from which it was created even though no node is listed. When you attempt to create the file share, it is owned by default by the owning node.

This behavior is also an issue when you use the Application Wizard when the wizard attempts to automatically create the groups, IP address, name, and File Share resources all at once.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, right-click the group, and then click Move Group to move the group so that it is owned by the other node, and then attempt to create the File Share resource again.

Note that there should be a Physical Disk resource in the group on which the File Share resource is dependent; move the disk resource to the group before attempting to bring the disk online.
