Memory and deadlock issues for the RD Virtualization Host and RD Connection Broker role services in Windows 8.1

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use a personal virtual desktop virtual machine in Windows 8.1.
  • You create a patch schedule for each personal virtual desktop virtual machine.

In this scenario, you may experience the following issues:
  • Issue 1
Every time that the virtual machine restarts, high memory and CPU usage by the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RD Virtualization Host) role service occurs.
  • Issue 2
The RD Connection Broker role service leaks memory when personal virtual desktop patching tasks are enumerated.
  • Issue 3
The RD Virtualization Host role service enters a deadlock state and stops processing additional tasks.

Cause

This problem occurs because the patching of the personal virtual desktop for each virtual machine is cumulated incorrectly, and the shared Read/Write lock is used incorrectly.

Resolution

To resolve these issues, apply the following hotfix. This hotfix fixes the following specific issues:
  • Issue 1
The RD Virtualization Host tracking of the patch schedule when a virtual machine is restarted
  • Issue 2
The RD Connection Broker role service memory management when patch schedules are enumerated
  • Issue 3
The RD Virtualization Host task processing synchronization

Windows 8.1 file information and notes

Important Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Blue RTM" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Blue RTM" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
