Application settings do not sync after you force a restart on a UE-V-enabled computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you have Microsoft User Experience Virtualization 2.0 (UE-V) installed and enabled on two computers, and that applications are running on the first computer. If you force the first computer to restart without first letting the applications exit, application settings on that computer do not synchronize with the second computer.

For example, consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer on which UE-V is installed and enabled.
  • You start an application, such as Calc.exe, that typically synchronizes its settings.
  • In this program, you make some changes to the program settings, such as changing from standard layout to programmer layout.
  • You leave the program running.
  • You start a program such as Notepad.
  • In this program, you create a file or open an existing file, and you make some changes to the file.
  • You restart the computer, and then you wait for the Force a restart screen to appear.
In this scenario, if you force the restart, the settings in Calc.exe are not written to either of the following locations:
  • The local sync location (%localappdata%\Microsoft\UEV\LocalSyncFolder\SettingsPackages), if the SyncMethod property is set to SyncProvider
  • The SettingsStoragePath location (as set in the UE-V configuration) if the SyncMethod property is set to None (also known as a "Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) scenario")

Resolution

To resolve this problem if settings are not synchronizing, do not force a restart. Instead, use either of the following methods:
  • Cancel the restart. Then, close all applications and resume the restart.

Note As long as no running applications block the restart process, the settings should be synchronized.
  • Let Windows shut down in the usual way.
