Summary

This step-by-step article describes how to open documents from, and save documents to, a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Web site by using Microsoft Office programs.

Open a File from an FTP Site

To open a file from an FTP site, follow these steps:

For Office 2003 and earlier versions of Office:
  1. On the File menu, click
    Open.
  2. In the Look In list, click
    Add/Modify FTP Locations.
  3. In the Name of FTP Site box, type the name of the FTP server.

For example, if the FTP site is located on the Internet, type the name by using this format:
    ftp://ftp.microsoft.com
If the FTP site is part of your company's intranet, type the name by using this format:
    ftp://server name/folder
  4. If the FTP site supports anonymous authentication, click the Anonymous option.

  5. If you must have a user account on the FTP site, click the User option, and then type your name in the User list. Then, type your password (if you have one) in the
    Password box.
  6. Click Add.
  7. Click OK.
The FTP site appears in the list of sites where you can open or save files.

For 2007 Office programs:
  1. In the upper-right corner of the Office program window, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.

Then, type your password in the
Password box if you have a password.
  6. Click OK.

Save a File to an FTP Site

  1. For Office 2003 and earlier versions of Office:
On the File menu, click Save As.

    For 2007 Office programs:
    On the File menu, click
    Save As.
  2. In the Save In list, click the name of the FTP location.

The path should look similar to the following:
    ftp://ftp.microsoft.com
If you have not defined an FTP site, see the "Open a File from an FTP Site" section of this article.
If you have appropriate access permissions to the FTP site, you should be able to save files to the FTP site.

Troubleshooting

To verify your connection to the FTP site, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click
    Run.
  2. Type the name of the FTP site.

    For example, type:
    ftp://ftp.microsoft.com
If your Web browser starts and you can see the contents of the FTP site, you have the correct access to the site.

This feature requires that you have open and save permissions on the FTP site.
