Network bridge shows incorrect speed when resuming a Windows 7 PC from sleep or hibernate

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows 7-based computer connected to a Local Area Network via Ethernet cable.
  • This same computer is also connected to a wireless network.
  • You create a network bridge by following the instructions in How to create a network bridge.
  • You let the computer enter sleep or hibernate.
When you resume the computer from sleep or hibernate, it is possible that the network bridge may show an incorrect connection speed that is neither the active Ethernet nor wireless connections.

Cause

This is a timing issue between the bridge driver and the NDIS driver. The bridge driver is designed to select the maximum transmission link speed instead of the real link speed when the media connected flag is not set. It is possible that momentarily the media connected flag will not be set while the NDIS driver is trying to re-establish the connections and the bridge driver queries for the connection speed.

Resolution

To resolve this issue and correctly display the active link speed again, disable and then enable the network bridge adapter.
