User of a trusted forest domain cannot be added to a local group in Windows

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You establish two Active Directory forests.
  • You create a one-way or two-way forest trust between the forests.
  • You enable selective authentication over the forest trust.
  • You have a computer in the trusting forest that runs Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012.
  • You open the Active Directory Users and Computers tool (Dsa.msc) on the computer, and you try to add a user of the trusted forest domain to a group.
  • In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, you click the Location button to select the trusted forest domain. You type the user name, and then you click the Check Name button.

In this situation, the user name cannot be found in the trusted forest domain.
