Error messages when you try to start the simulator in Visual Studio 2012 on a Windows 8.1-based computer

Symptoms

When you try to start the simulator that is provided in Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Professional or Visual Studio 2012 Express on a computer that you upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, you receive error messages that resemble the following:

Windows Simulator needs your current credentials. Please lock this computer then unlock it using your current password and run the Windows Simulator again. To lock your computer, Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and then press enter OK
Unable to start the simulator. Cannot process request because the process (2072) has exited.

How to obtain this update

This update is applied automatically when you upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

Note Update 2890141 has to be applied before this update is applied. However, update 2890141 is also applied automatically when you upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

To use the update in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this update.
