File History does not finish file backup when a file system filter driver is installed in Windows

Symptoms


Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, you install a third-party file system filter driver, and you enable encryption on a specific drive.
  • You enable File History and set this drive as the backup drive by doing the following:
    • You start Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click File History.
    • You click Select drive, select a USB disk for a File History drive, and then you click OK.
    • You click Turn on to turn on File History.
  • You edit some files on the desktop.
In this scenario, the file history backup operation for the file fails, and the following event is logged in "Application and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory-Engine":

Cause

This issue occurs because the File History listener thread does not handle the STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED error from a minifilter driver correctly.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
