FIX: Image on monitors freezes while the display contents are updated in Windows

Symptoms

Assume that you have one or more monitors attached to a computer that's running Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. The image on one or more of the monitors may freeze occasionally while the display contents are being updated (refreshed).

Note This issue is more likely to occur when there are more monitors connected to the computer.

Cause

This problem occurs because of an issue in the Win32k.sys process.

Resolution

To resolve this issue in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, install update 2919355.
To resolve this issue in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, install the hotfix that is described in this article.

Hotfix information for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
