DFS link does not go offline when you access redirected folders from a different site in Windows

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a domain environment that has multiple sites.
  • You create a Distributed File System (DFS) root, and you configure the "Exclude targets outside of the client's site" setting on the DFS root to enable same-site target selection.
  • You create a DFS link under the DFS root.
  • You configure Folder Redirection Group Policy settings to redirect user folders to the DFS link. In the meantime, Offline Files is enabled on the redirected folders.
  • When you are not at the same site as the DFS root, you log on to a Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computer.
  • You try to access the redirected folders.

In this situation, the DFS link does not go offline as expected, and you cannot access the offline cache of the redirected folders.
