Closing Print Properties is slower for Cluster printers on Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a system running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • This system is running in a cluster environment.
  • You open the Print Management console.
  • You attach to a Cluster virtual server and view the print queues.
  • You open the Printer Properties for one of the print queues.
In this scenario, when you click OK, it takes significantly longer to close the Printer Properties window than it does when viewing a non-Cluster print queue.

Cause

When you click the OK button for Printer Properties, the registry settings for the printer are updated. Since it is a Cluster print queue, those registry writes are redirected to the cluster service to update the cluster registry hive. This adds some latency to the registry writes, which causes the Printer Properties window to take longer to close.

Resolution

This behavior is by design.
