GPMC reports a Processing Error while trying to detect DCs

Symptoms

You are working in a domain environment with Windows Server 2012 domain controllers. You open Group Policy Management Console on the 2012 DC and check the status of Active Directory and Sysvol Replication for the domain. When you click "Detect Now" GPMC reports an error as below.

"A Processing error occurred collecting data using this base domain controller. Please change the base domain controller and try again."

Cause

GPMC is trying to retrive the Domain Controller Name using both DsGetDcName and DsGetDomainControllerInfo. This compare fails with the above error if DsGetDcName returns a value that is not in CAPS.

Resolution

DsGetDcName  is reading the name information from HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Hostname.
Check the hostname entry, convert it to All CAPS and then restart the netlogon service on the DC to fix the problem.
