CAU Self-Updating Fails with Access Denied with Long VCO Names

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Cluster Aware Updating (CAU) may fail when attempting a Self-Updating run if a prestaged VCO name is longer than 15 characters. You may receive one of the following error messages:

(CimException) Access is denied. HRESULT 0x80070005

(ClusterUpdateException) There was a failure in a Common Information Model (CIM) operation, that is, an operation performed by software that Cluster-Aware Updating depends on.

Additionally, the following Event IDs are logged in the Microsoft-Windows-ClusterAwareUpdating-Management/Admin channel:
Note: these events may also be logged for reasons other than the VCO name length

Cause

Due to NetBIOS 15-character name length limitation, a pre-staged VCO name longer than 15 characters is silently truncated by some of the APIs that CAU uses.
