Lsass.exe process crashes on a computer that's running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Symptoms

Assume that one of the following conditions is true:
  • A domain controller that's running Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is under a heavy load of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) traffic.
  • A Windows 7 SP1-based computer is running Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS).
In either of these situations, the Lsass.exe process crashes, and then the computer restarts. Additionally, an event that resembles the following is written to the Application log:

Note This event identifies NTDSATQ.dll as the faulting module.

Cause

This issue occurs because the computer does not handle the incoming LDAP requests correctly in certain situations under heavy LDAP traffic. This causes the failure in the NTDSATQ.dll module that crashes the Lsass.exe process.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes
Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems.
