Filter Manager Verifier unexpectedly flags a violation after a mini-filter performs a reparse operation in Windows

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You develop a mini-filter driver and then enable Driver Verifier for the driver.
  • The mini-filter successfully calls the FltCreateFileEx2 routine and then performs a reparse operation on a computer that is running Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012.
  • The mini-filter calls the FltReleaseFileNameInformation function to release the file name information from the FLT_CREATEFILE_TARGET_ECP_CONTEXT structure.
In this scenario, Filter Manager Verifier unexpectedly flags a violation. Additionally, you receive the following warning from Filter Manager Verifier:

"FILTER VERIFIER ERROR: A filter tried to release/free an object that it did not own..(Filter = 8B93BA28 (KLIF)), ObjectType = FLT_FILE_NAME_INFORMATION, Object = A4E62ED4).Type "!fltkd.filter 8B93BA28 8 1" in the debugger for more information about the. filter and objects referenced/allocated by the filter.."
