Cause

When you apply System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Cumulative Update 6 or Cumulative Update 7, new Unix agent installer files are extracted to the following folder:
%ProgramFiles%\System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2\AgentManagement\UnixAgents\
Note This may be a different location on your management server, depending on where System Center Operations Manager is installed.

The agents that are included with the following Systems Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Cross Platform updates that have the following version numbers are removed during the installation of Cumulative Update 6 or Cumulative Update 7:
UpdateVersion number
Cumulative Update 5277
Cumulative Update 2 (hotfix 979490)258
Update (hotfix 973583)252

The agents that are included with the original release of System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 have a version number of 248. These files are not removed during installation. Instead, these files are replaced with 1 kilobyte (KB) files. These files are as follows:
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.aix.5.ppc.lpp.gz
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.aix.6.ppc.lpp.gz
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.hpux.11iv2.ia64.depot.Z
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.hpux.11iv2.parisc.depot.Z
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.hpux.11iv3.ia64.depot.Z
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.hpux.11iv3.parisc.depot.Z
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.rhel.4.x64.rpm
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.rhel.4.x86.rpm
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.rhel.5.x64.rpm
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.rhel.5.x86.rpm
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.sles.10.x64.rpm
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.sles.10.x86.rpm
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.sles.9.x86.rpm
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.solaris.10.sparc.pkg.Z
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.solaris.10.x86.pkg.Z
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.solaris.8.sparc.pkg.Z
  • Scx-1.0.4-248.solaris.9.sparc.pkg.Z
These 1 KB files are used by the discovery wizard during the agent installation. An output of the Debugview trace that is collected during the installation displays the following errors:

==============================================

1295 error: open of This failed: No such file or directory

1296 error: open of file failed: No such file or directory

1297 error: open of can failed: No such file or directory

1298 error: open of safely failed: No such file or directory

1299 error: open of be failed: No such file or directory

1300 error: open of ignored failed: No such file or directory

==============================================
The concatenated file names in these errors produce the following message:
This file can safely be ignored

The installer assumes that the concatenated file names are a location. Therfore, the installer fails.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, remove the 1 KB agent installer files from the following folder on the management server under the System Center Operations Manager installation directory:
%ProgramFiles%\System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2\AgentManagement\UnixAgents\
Make sure that you have valid installation files from Cumulative Update 7 on the folder that contains the version 318 files.

If you have Cumulative Update 6 applied on the management servers, the Unix agent installation file version is 298.

If the latest Unix agent installation files are unavailable in the following folder, follow these steps to obtain the installation files:
%ProgramFiles%\System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2\AgentManagement\UnixAgents\
  1. Rename the SCXAgent DLL files in the following folder to something like SCXAgent*.dll.old:
    %ProgramFiles%\System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2\AgentManagement\UnixAgents
  2. Reapply Cumulative Update 6 or Cumulative Update 7 on the management server to obtain the latest Unix agents files that were extracted to this folder.
