Brief audio playback heard on resume from Sleep if WMP was previously playing multimedia content

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use Windows Media Player to play an audio or video file on a computer that is running Windows 8.
  • You press the power button to put the computer into Sleep or Hibernate mode while the audio or video is playing.
  • You resume the computer from sleep or hibernate mode.
  • You are prompted for a password at the lock screen. Note: This only happens if a password has been enabled for the account and "Require a password" has been enabled on wakeup in the Control Panel Power Options applet.
In this scenario, a very short section of audio may be heard from the audio or video file that was previously being played in WMP.

Cause

The behavior is due to a timing issue between Windows Media Player and the Windows Audio Service (audiosrv.dll). This issue is only observed on some computers with a very specific hardware configuration that causes WMP to receive the power event sometime after the Windows Audio Service stops the audio stream.

Resolution

The noise heard on resume from Sleep or Hibernate is very brief and may not be noticeable unless the audio volume is at maximum. To workaround this issue, it is recommended that you pause the Windows Media Player before putting the computer into Sleep or Hibernate mode.
