Xbox Music or Windows Media Player may display an error message when DisplayPort monitor is powered off on Windows 8 and Windows RT

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a device running Windows 8 or Windows RT, and this device has a DisplayPort monitor attached to it.
  • You are using DisplayPort audio to play sound through speakers on the DisplayPort monitor, and you do not have any other audio output devices connected to the system.
  • You play audio using the Xbox Music application, or using Windows Media Player, and then power off the DisplayPort monitor.

In this scenario, when you turn the monitor back on, you may receive the following error message from Xbox Music:

Can't play.

Make sure headphones or speakers are connected. If you're using an HDMI cable for audio and video, make sure your TV is on.

Or, you may receive the following error message from Windows Media Player:

An audio device was disconnected or reconfigured. Verify that the audio device is connected, and then try to play the item again.

Cause

This behavior is by design. When no other audio devices are connected to the system, the only audio endpoint on the system goes away when the monitor is powered off. Therefore, an error message is displayed by Xbox Music or Windows Media Player. The error messages will only be seen on specific DisplayPort monitors, and will not occur if another audio output device is connected to the system.

Resolution

If another audio output device is connected to the system, Xbox Music or Windows Media Player will switch to that audio device when the monitor is powered off, and then back to the DisplayPort monitor when the monitor is powered back on. No error messages will be displayed.

If no other audio devices are connected to the system when the monitor is powered off, open a different audio file or re-open the original audio file after the error message is displayed to resume playback.
