Screen rotation sometimes fails after system is booted, rebooted or resumed from sleep on Windows 8

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows 8 device.
  • The display is capable of screen rotation.
  • The Windows 8 device is booted, rebooted or resumed from sleep (S3).

In this scenario, you may notice that the screen rotation fails to function. You will also notice that the Simple Device Orientation Sensor is not loaded in Device Manager.

Resolution

To work around this issue, you can do one of the following options:

Option #1 Stop and Restart the Sensor Monitoring Service.
  1. Open the Services Management Console (Type Services.msc at the Windows 8 Start Screen).
  2. Locate and right-click on the Sensor Monitoring Service.
  3. Select Stop under All Tasks.
  4. Right-click on the Sensor Monitoring Service again.
  5. Select Start under All Tasks.


Option #2 Restart the Windows 8 device.
