Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows 8 PC.
  • The PC has a USB 3.0 port on it.
  • You plug in a USB Thumb Drive into the USB 3.0 port.

In this scenario, the USB Thumb Drive is not recognized after it is plugged in.

Cause

This issue occurs because you have a System Tray application that is monitoring for USB device arrivals, and this application queries the USB Descriptors for the device when it arrives. In this scenario, some USB 3.0 devices return 0 bytes when queried for the Descriptors. Because this is an invalid response, Windows fails the device enumeration.

Resolution

Stop or Uninstall the System Tray application, and then plug in the USB device.
