Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running Windows 8 on a tablet-based PC.
  • You are at the desktop and have an application or windows open that contains text.
  • The tablet display is rotated 180 degrees.

In this scenario, you may notice that some of the text on the display may now appear slightly blurred or jagged. However, it is still readable.

Cause

This is a known issue with ClearType and the rotation bit not getting set.  When the screen is rotated 180 degrees, what should happen is that the rotation is detected and a ClearType rotation bit is flipped.  However, the rotation is not detected and the bit is not flipped.

Workaround

To work around this issue once it has occurred, exit the desktop app or window and try restarting it again.
