STOP 0x8e error when printing a document on a printer shared by a Windows Server 2003 print server

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a print server that is running Windows Server 2003.
  • You have a character that is linked to 8 or more fonts.
In this scenario, the computer crashes. Additionally, you receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:
STOP: 0x0000008E (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)

Notes
  • This Stop error describes a KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED issue.
  • The parameters in this Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "Stop 0x0000008E" errors are caused by this issue.

If this occurs, after reboot the server, you can find the following events in the System event log

Resolution

If you hit the problem, please consider using the workaround below. With the steps below, client machine sends the print data in RAW format instead of EMF format. With RAW format, the problem does not occur.

  1. Open Printer and FAX
  2. Right-click the shared printer and click Property
  3. Click Advanced tab
  4. Uncheck “Enable advanced printing features”
  5. Click OK to close the property dialog
