IIS 7.5 or IIS 8.0 process crashes in Windows

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5 on a computer that is running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Or, you install IIS 8.0 on a computer that is running Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • The system sends a response that contains more than 2000 entity chunks.
  • When the system calls the SendResponse method to send the response, the initial I/O request is canceled. However, the request connection is still valid.
In this scenario, the IIS process crashes. Therefore, all the web applications that rely on IIS crash.

Cause

This issue is caused by an access violation. When the SendResponse method tries to resume the I/O request, the list of the chunks is repopulated. However, the chunks are freed.
