1783 RPC_X_BAD_STUB_DATA error message when a Windows Server 2008 R2-based DC tries to replicate an RPC packet

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you have several Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controllers (DCs) in an Active Directory environment. When a domain controller tries to replicate a remote procedure call (RPC) packet that is larger than 10 megabyte (MB), the replication fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Error 1783 RPC_X_BAD_STUB_DATA

Note
The issue may occur even after you set the "Replicator inter site packet size" registry key to a value that is smaller than 10 MB. This registry key is a DWORD-type registry key that is located in the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters

Cause

This issue occurs because a hard-coded limitation limits the size of RPC packets to 10 MB.
