Custom font may not be updated until PC is rebooted

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a PC running Windows 8.
  • A custom font is installed on the PC.
  • The installed custom font is updated programmatically.

In this scenario, the font may not be updated as expected.

Cause

There is an open handle to the font in the font cache service and it cannot be updated.

Reboot the system to complete the update of the font.
