Touch input may be redirected to an external non-touch capable monitor

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC with multi-touch capability.
  • You have an external non-touch capable monitor attached to the system.

In this scenario, the touch screen events may be directed to the external display rather than the primary multi-touch enabled display.

Cause

Microsoft has identified this as a known issue on all products in the applies to section.

Resolution

There are three possible solutions for this problem:

Solution 1

Rebooting the system may correct the issue. If this does not correct the problem, use one of the below solutions.


Solution 2

  1. Right-click the desktop background and click "Screen resolution". Alternately
  2. Select the primary display.
  3. Check the box for "Make this my primary display".
  4. Select "OK".

Solution 3

  1. Navigate to the Windows 8 Start screen and search for "touch" under Settings.
  2. Select "Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input" .
  3. Select "Setup..." to the right of "Configure your pen and touch displays".
  4. Select "Touch Input...".
  5. Follow the instructions that are displayed on your screen.

More Information

When this issue occurs, mouse input still functions as expected.
