Windows 8 touch and pen calibration tool only supports running in landscape mode

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a touch or pen-enabled Windows 8 or 8.1 PC.
  • The display is configured for portrait mode.
  • In the Control Panel Tablet PC Settings applet, you select the Calibrate button for touch or pen input.

In this scenario, the calibration window is displayed in landscape mode, which results in part of the window not being visible. As a result, calibration cannot be completed.

Cause

This is by design. The Windows inbox touch and pen calibration tool was only designed to run while in landscape mode.

Resolution

Once in this state, touch anywhere on the calibration screen multiple times.  Eventually the calibration will complete and you will see a message asking if you want to save the calibration data.  Select “No” so that the data is not saved.

If you need to run the Tablet PC Settings calibration tool, first change your display orientation to landscape. Once calibration is completed, you can change the screen orientation back to portrait.  The screen orientation can be changed by launching the Control Panel Display applet and selecting "Adjust resolution". Under Orientation, you can switch between Portrait and Landscape.

More Information

Note that for certified touch-enabled PCs, the inbox calibration tool should not be used as the system should already be pre-calibrated for optimum performance. For more information, read the following Knowledge Base article:
