Commerce Server 2000 Free Text Search Generates OLE DB Provider Error 80040e14

Symptoms

Commerce Server 2000 has a free text search object. Of the parameters that are passed to this COM component, one specifies the location to start searching, and another specifies the number of rows to return back from the search. If the start position is changed from the default, the following error message occurs:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e14' Warning: The table '##MSPPJOH035414:15:34:970' has been created but its maximum row size (10002) exceeds the maximum number of bytes per row (8060). INSERT or UPDATE of a row in this table will fail if the resulting row length exceeds 8060 bytes.
