Symptoms

Assume that you upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Preview. At the end of the Windows 8.1 Preview lifespan, you may not be notified to upgrade to the release version of Windows 8.1.

Cause

Windows migrates your Windows 8 license to Windows 8.1 on upgrade. This process sets certain policies that prevent the end-of-life notification for the prerelease version from being shown.
