Duplicate scanners may appear in the Paint application on Windows 8

Summary

Consider the following scenario:

You have a PC running Windows 8, and a USB scanner is connected to this PC. To acquire an image from the scanner, you open Paint, and go to File > From scanner or camera.

Despite there being only one scanner connected to the PC, the Select Device dialog may appear, and multiple instances of the scanner may be listed in this dialog.

More Information

This issue only occurs on specific scanner devices, and only if the scanner is moved from one USB port on the PC to another USB port on the PC. One of the scanner instances in the Select Device dialog will be operational, and can be selected to be used for scanning. If the scanner remains in the same USB port, the issue will not occur.

This is a known issue with Windows 8, and is currently under investigation by Microsoft.
