Application exits unexpectedly when it tries to verify a smart card PIN in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

Assume that you have a smart card reader installed in a Windows 8-based or Windows Server 2012-based computer. You insert a smart card into the reader, and then you run an application that tries to verify the smart card PIN. In this situation, the application exits unexpectedly.

Resolution
