"Refresh rate" and "Color depth" options are missing in Windows 7

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7.
  • You have a monitor whose resolution height is greater than the resolution width.
  • You open the in-box Display item in Control Panel to adjust the Refresh rate and Color depth options.

In this scenario, you notice that the Refresh rate and Color depth options are missing from the in-box Display item in Control Panel.

Cause

On monitors whose resolution height is greater than the resolution width, Windows 7 does not report the Refresh rate and Color depth options correctly in the in-box Display item in Control Panel.

Resolution

This issue was fixed in the Windows 8 in-box Display item in Control Panel. For Windows 7, you can use third-party display-management software to adjust the refresh rate on monitors whose resolution height is greater than the resolution width.
