Some text is not printed when you print multiple documents that use the same font in Windows

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows 8
    • Windows Server 2012
    • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
  • You start a printing application, and then you print multiple documents at the same time.
  • Two documents that you print use the same font and are printed within 15 milliseconds of one another.
In this scenario, some text in the two documents is not printed.

Cause

This issue occurs because the text that uses the font becomes corrupted when the two threads try to install the font at the same time. The name of the font is generated by the RAND function together with a SEEDvalue whose time value is set to srand(time(NULL)). When the two documents are printed at the same time, the SEEDvalue for the font is the same in both documents. Therefore, the conflict occurs.
