Text-based TIFF file search or classification fails in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

When you perform a search or classification of Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) files, you experience one of the following issues, depending on the scenario.

Scenario 1
  • You install Windows TIFF IFilter on a computer that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.
  • You search for a TIFF file.
  • Your search is based on text in the file.
  • The TIFF file is in an indexed location.
In this scenario, the TIFF file is not listed in the search results.

Note If the computer is running Windows Server 2012, you must have the Windows Search service installed.

Scenario 2
  • You install Windows TIFF IFilter and the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2012.
  • You use the File Classification Infrastructure (FCI) to classify TIFF files. The classification is based on content.
In this scenario, TIFF files that contain strings that are specified in classification parameters are not classified.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, follow these steps.

Note To follow these steps, you have to use the Local Group Policy Editor. To use the Local Group Policy Editor, you must be logged on to the computer by using an account that has administrative permissions.
  1. Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run box.
  2. Type gpedit.msc, and then press Enter.
  3. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates.
  4. Expand Windows Components, expand Search, and then click OCR.
  5. Double-click Force TIFF IFilter to perform OCR for every page in a TIFF document.
  6. In the dialog box that opens, click Enabled, and then click OK.
  7. Retry the search or file classification after the Group Policy setting takes effect.
