The link state information is never written to the hard disk; the link state information is always in RAM. The routing masters in each routing group receive the link state information when the routing masters are restarted and when the routing engine is restarted. The link state information is dynamically updated when routing group members determine that a link has changed its state, and then push the updates to their routing master. There is only one routing master in each routing group, and only the routing master can increment the link state version number (major version).
The link state information contains information about connectors, servers, routing groups, address spaces, the link state, the version, the organization, and costs. The best way to see the current link state information is to run the Winroute tool (Winroute.exe). Winroute.exe is located in the Support\Utils\I386 folder on the Exchange 2000 CD. Winroute.exe displays all unformatted information that is transferred from the link state port in the bottom pane.
To determine the size of the link state information, you must use Winroute.exe to open the link state information and then save this data to a text file. The size of the text file is the same size as the link state information.
