Windows Media Player freezes when you use AutoPlay for an audio CD in Windows 7

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Internet Explorer 10 on a Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer.
  • You configure the AutoPlay feature so that Windows automatically uses Windows Media Player to play audio CDs.
  • You insert an audio CD into the CD-ROM device, and then Windows Media Player starts.
In this scenario, Windows Media Player freezes.

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows Media Player runs in Windows 7 compatibility mode after Internet Explorer 10 is installed.

The global version of this hotfix installs files that have the attributes that are listed in the following tables. Windows 7 file information notes
  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
